Kid back talk is on the rise… And it starts when children are toddlers. Luckily, it’s one of the easiest behaviors to get rid of if you have a solid makeover plan and consistently use it. Here is a customized plan to stop back talk.

Step 1: Call out any back talk on the spot
Any time your kid uses back talk, name it on the spot. He is then clear on what you expect. “That’s back talk. I don’t listen to that talk.” Make sure he knows what he did wrong and how to make it right.

A whiny child, however, isn’t deliberately annoying or spoiled. Whining is often the only way that young kids can express themselves when they’re tired, cranky, hungry, uncomfortable, or just don’t want to do something. Although three- and four-year-olds’ language skills are rapidly improving, they still don’t have the vocabulary to describe all of these feelings, explains Dr. Michele Borba, EdD, author of Parents Do Make a Difference.

Even when your child is able to articulate that she is hungry for lunch or hates sitting in her car seat, for example, she may still whine because she’s learned from experience that you’ll pay attention. “For three- and four-year-olds who are testing the limits of their independence, whining makes them feel very powerful,” says psychologist Dr. Carolyn Crowder, PhD, coauthor of Whining: 3 Steps to Stopping It Before the Tears and Tantrums Start.

“If you can’t stand whining, your child will do it even more, simply because it gets a reaction,” agrees Dr. Jane Nelsen, EdD, coauthor of Positive Discipline for Preschoolers. Even scolding your child can reinforce the behavior. “Kids just want a response. When they don’t know how to get a positive response, they’ll go for a negative one,” Dr. Nelsen explains. And needless to say, giving in ("OK, you can have one piece of candy, but promise you’ll eat your lunch?") doesn’t work either. You’ll get a respite from the whining, but you’re still perpetuating the problem.

About Susan Henrichs: Tadpole or Shark?
Some parents want to take advantage of the swimming instinct and start special swimming lessons for their baby at about a year. If this idea appeals to you, enrolling in lessons can provide a healthy activity to share with your child. Before entering any infant swimming program, however, get your doctor’s approval and investigate the qualifications of the instructors. Enroll only in a program where parents are expected to swim with their baby.

The Scoop on the Spoon
Now is the time to let your child experiment with a spoon. Parents need to be prepared for messier meals and to call on all their diplomatic skills to strike a balance between helping their child and letting the child do it alone. Some parents have found that using two spoons helps: The child practices with one, while the parent pops at least a few bits into baby’s mouth with the other.

About AD Kids Inc.: The Nine Temperament Traits:
In the late 1950’s, two researchers, Stella Chess and Alexander Thomas, began collecting data for The New York Longitudinal Study. Chess and Thomas studied over two hundred children from infancy to age eight and identified nine in-born traits. The degree to which your child manifests each of these nine traits determines their overall temperament.
Activity Level
How active is your child? Is he always on-the-go or is he more likely to sit quietly and move at a moderate pace?

Second, Third or Fourth Child Syndrome
A first child often is a novelty and parents put a lot of time and effort into making sure everything is perfect for them. A first child has his/her parent’s full attention while a second, third or fourth child is constantly seeking her parent’s attention.

In a larger family, parents have less time to spend quietly talking and exploring the world. A toddler may be spending a lot of time with Mom as she is running between soccer practice and ballet; however, most of the conversation may be directed toward the older siblings. When Dad comes home late for work he may be bombarded with soccer stories or helping with last-minute homework assignments. Unfortunately, little time is available for Dad to talk and play with the toddler because most likely she is getting ready for bed.

In order to help your baby learn, it’s important to repeat the activity regularly. “Babies learn through repetition,” says Morey. She suggests doing the same activity every day, gradually building on it by altering the activity as Baby develops and is ready to do more. Try making a ritual out of it by playing the game at the same time every day as part of another activity. Maybe you always play peek-a-boo while changing diapers, or maybe you play during bath time. “Rituals are really important with children because they allow the child to feel safe,” says Morey.

Knowing when your child is ready for certain games is also important. Sometimes you can over-stimulate babies by doing activities they are developmentally not ready for. Signs of over-stimulation include crying, falling asleep or turning the head away. You can learn age-appropriate activities by reading books, attending infant development classes or even surfing online.

But no matter what you do, make sure it’s fun for you and your baby. Playing games will help the two of you share an even closer bond. “It is a special bonding time with the parent,” says Rosenblum. “There are so many things to do with your child, and when you see that first smile, laugh and them trying to imitate a game, it is so rewarding.”

A Rule of Thumb
Walk into any shoe store and you will see parents on their knees beside their children, pushing on toes and squeezing the sides of shoes, trying to determine a good fit.

Brunick feels this is a good effort, but not quite right. “This is one of those passed down methods of fitting shoes,” says Brunick. “Try this instead: When fitting your child’s foot, determine how much toe room they should have in the shoe by leaving space that is equal to the width of the child’s thumb – not the parent’s thumb – between the child’s longest toe and the end of the shoe while they are standing. Keep in mind that the longest toe isn’t always the big toe.”

“I do the pressing on the toes thing when fitting my son with shoes,” says Victoria Walker, a mom from Fort Myers, Fla. “This lets me see how much room he has to grow. I also have him walk in them to see if his foot lifts out of the shoe. I’ve always done it like this, but as he gets older, he can tell me much better how they feel, too.”
